New York Community Hospital specializes in the management of patients with acute and chronic pulmonary disorders. A large staff of board-certified specialists, many trained in pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine, are expert in the management of diseases ranging from asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), to pneumonia.
Patients requiring mechanical assistance with breathing with indwelling endotracheal tubes or tracheostomies, present complex clinical challenges, but are routinely managed with very low complication rates. Whenever possible patients are gradually weaned from these devices and allowed to breathe normally again.
The division is strongly supported by an outstanding respiratory therapy department which ensures optimal ventilation around the clock, with a zero ventilator-associated pneumonia rate.
